The Beginnings and Popularity of Winter Sports

At the beginning of the last century, winter sports such as ice skating, sledging, and ice yachting were already extremely popular at Lake Balaton. The lake often froze over, transforming the lakeside atmosphere into a summery vibe during ice skating sessions, organized mainly by local Boating and Skating Clubs. Designated ice skating rinks near major hotels and shores provided safe areas for sports and entertainment.

Risks and Equipment in Ice Skating

Ice skating on Lake Balaton posed various risks, including holes cut by fishermen or cracks known as “riánások,” open-water lines caused by compressed air and water vapor. Devices attachable to shoes were used for ice skating, available in Kesztely’s stores of that era, highlighting the seriousness of the ice skating lifestyle at that time.

Fashion and Social Customs

Period fashion was also present on the ice rinks, with people ice skating in everyday streetwear. Women’s clothing was less practical on the ice rink, as the long, narrow skirts hindered movement. By the 1910s, skaters were wearing shorter coats, making their attire more practical.

Competitions and Social Events

Ice skating on Lake Balaton wasn’t just about physical activity; it also became a social event. Regular figure skating competitions, ice dancing, and pair skating were organized. These events were highly popular, offering entertainment to hundreds or even thousands of people. Pair skating during this time allowed for some relaxation of social norms, and even a hand kiss was not out of place.
