About Us

“Behind Fonyód Hill, beyond the hustle and bustle of the Balaton lakeside resort town, the Boros Castle Guesthouse rises like a peninsula in the middle of the Nagyberek nature reserve.”

“The building and its associated 30-hectare estate were once owned by Count Zichy and his family, who used it as their summer residence. Today, it offers a perfect retreat for those who love peaceful relaxation, appreciate natural values, and embrace a natural lifestyle.

The castle beautifully reflects the life philosophy of its owners: to live our lives meaningfully, spend quality time with family or friends, prioritize traditional flavors, find peace in the rush of the world, away from the noise of big cities, love nature, and preserve our environment.

The castle, accommodating up to 26 people, with its family-friendly environment, sailing, boating, and wine-tasting programs for groups, and elegant surroundings, provides an ideal venue for training sessions and corporate events. The building features 10 freshly renovated rooms with bathrooms, including 2-person and 4-person two-room terrace rooms, offering stunning views of the Fonyód hills and the Nagyberek nature reserve.

The History of the Castle

Boros Castle is located on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, in Fonyód, on a 30-hectare estate in the Nagyberek nature reserve, surrounded by the area’s significant hunting grounds and the proximity of the Csisztapuszta thermal bath.

Count Béla Zichy, scion of a wealthy landowner family, embraced the Balaton cult in the 1890s and donated part of his 100-acre forest on Várhegy in Fonyód to create perhaps the most prestigious villa estate on the shores of Lake Balaton. One of the buildings that has survived and was reconstructed by 2000 is today’s Boros Castle.

The hunting lodge built on the 30-hectare nature reserve allowed the lord to indulge in his passion for hunting and horse riding. The pristine nature around the castle has remained a significant hunting ground to this day.

The manor, once owned by the Zichy family, functioned as a local peat mine office until the 1980s, while its condition deteriorated significantly over decades. From the 1990s, thanks to the restoration, it soon regained its old, atmospheric hunting castle character.

The family-operated castle, without the cohesive and dedicated work of the family, would hardly have been reborn in its current form. The building was rebuilt with the host’s unwavering enthusiasm, enormous stamina, professional expertise, and perseverance.

As part of such a success story, few can say that the owner once worked on this estate as a laborer, and his wife worked as a seasonal laborer. After the reconstruction of the building, in which every family member participated, including the 80-year-old grandmother, the master builder now, as the owner of his own castle, shares interesting stories about the building and its surroundings’ past while lovingly guiding guests through the ancient walls of the building.

We recommend Boros Castle to those guests who seek a genuine, relaxing retreat away from the noise of big cities and the crowds of holiday resorts, those who want to bring nature very close to themselves while enjoying the unique beauty of Lake Balaton, the Fonyód hills, and indulging in a wide range of water sports on Lake Balaton.”
